I-66 Inside the Beltway Workshop
(January 19, 2007)
When:
January 23rd, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.,
Where:
Washington-Lee High School
1300 N. Quincy Street, Arlington
Why:
To receive public input on proposed westbound spot improvements
The Virginia Department of Transportation is moving forward (finally) with plans to expand I-66 westbound capacity inside the Capital Beltway.
Proposed spot improvements include:
- Extending the Fairfax Drive on-ramp to Sycamore Street.
- Adding a lane on the Washington Blvd. on-ramp to extend the acceleration lane from Washington Blvd. to the Dulles Access Road.
- Extending the Spout Run on-ramp to Glebe Road.
All improvements will be constructed within existing right of way. No homes will be demolished; no bicycle trails destroyed or rare habitats disturbed.
I-66 is a federal highway and essential emergency evacuation route. It is a major regional facility that improves access and egress to the nation’s capital and allows Arlington, Alexandria and District residents access to jobs outside the Beltway. It also keeps tens of thousands of regional vehicles off neighborhood streets.
For these and other fundamental reasons, it is very important for those who support a better regional transportation and are concerned about the region’s totally inadequate evacuation capability to attend and record their views on these improvements.
A brief presentation on the design process will be followed by small group discussions and input.
The inclement weather make-up date is January 29th.
