Tell TPB to Vote for I-66 Improvements 3/12/09

I-66 Inside the Beltway:
Tell the Planning Board to Restore Spot Improvements

Just when you thought the transportation planning process could not get any more bizarre or less productive, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) proved you wrong with its February 18th vote to remove westbound I-66 spot improvements from the 2009 Constrained Long Range Plan and FY 2010-2015 Transportation Improvement Program.

The TPB will consider whether to restore these improvements on March 18th.

That’s why the TPB needs to hear from you today.

The I-66 improvements have been –

  • Designed to address the corridor’s worst westbound bottleneck.
  • Shown to improve travel speeds and safety in the I-66 corridor.
  • Approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
  • Approved by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority.
  • Approved previously by the Transportation Planning Board (TPB).

Phase 1 improvements to ease the corridor’s worst bottleneck (Fairfax Drive to Sycamore Street) are fully funded and can go to construction later this year. More than $20 million in federal funding could be lost if the TPB does not reverse its decision.
