Tysons Corner Construction

Tysons Corner Construction
(Updated February 22, 2010)

Urban Transformation:
Over the next four years, Tysons Corner will undergo a series of major construction projects that will unavoidably impact traffic in the area. From Dulles Rail to the Capital Beltway HOT lanes, construction teams will be out in various phases of development at all times of the day.

General Construction Guidelines:

1. Lane closures on the Beltway will not occur during peak weekday rush hours. (5AM – 9:30AM and 3:30PM – 9:30PM, Noon – 9:30PM on Fridays)

2. Businesses and residential communities will remain accessible.

3. Scheduled lane closures will be publicly communicated in advance.

4. Thru-traffic will not be directed to local streets.

Route 123 Lane Closures:
A two-year closure of the right lane of southbound Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) near I-495 (between Scott's Crossing and I-495) is scheduled to begin on or about Feb. 22, weather permitting. The closure is
necessary to build the Tysons East Metrorail Station.

The left lane closures will be set up approximately 500 feet in each direction from the Capital Beltway Overpass.

Traffic Pattern Changes on Route 7:

Due to upcoming construction of a new Metrorail station as part of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, the median of Route 7 at the intersection of Marshall's Drive and Frontage Road has been closed.

Traffic exiting Marshall's Drive and Frontage Road on to Route 7 are only allowed to turn right at these intersections.

Drivers may not turn from Marshall's Drive to westbound Route 7, nor from Frontage Road to Eastbound Route 7.

Additionally, drivers may not cross Route 7 from Marshall's Drive to Frontage Road, or from Frontage Road to Marshall's Drive.

These closures are permanent. Tysons Central 7 station construction will finish in 2013.

In addition, the ramp that connects southbound Route 123 to Route 7 is open to westbound Route 7 traffic only. Traffic is only allowed to turn right at this intersection. This new pattern will be in effect for approximately three years. Traffic may not access eastbound Route 7 from the ramp.

All drivers wishing to travel eastbound on Route 7 can access Route 7 by turning left from southbound Route 123 on to southbound International Drive.

Commuter Bus, Shuttle and Other Services:

To help lesson the burden of unavoidable congestion while these transportation improvements are under construction:

• Additional commuter bus service is being planned from Loudoun and Prince William Counties.

• An extended mid-day shuttle service is being planned.

• Additional traffic cameras are being installed throughout the area.

• Electronic display signs will be installed at Tysons Corner Mall.
