Alliance Recommendations to Receive Stimulus Funding 05/26/09
Two of Alliance's Top Three Stimulus Projects Funded
TPB's Action Renders I-66 Ineligible

Based on its January survey of 20 area private sector transportation professionals, the Alliance identified and endorsed three projects -- I-66 spot improvements inside the Beltway (Phases 2 and 3), the Fairfax County Parkway/Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive Interchange and the Fairfax County Parkway Environmental Proving Grounds Extension (Phases 3 and 4) -- as the best investments for federal stimulus dollars.

The Commonwealth has invested stimulus dollars in two of the three.

On May 21, 2009 the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) obligated $13 million for the Fairfax County Parkway/Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive Interchange and $60.1 million for the Fairfax County Parkway EPG Extension (Phases 3 and 4).

I-66 spot improvements (Phases 2 and 3) might also have been chosen except for the Transportation Planning Board’s March vote making Phases 2 and 3 ineligible for federal funding this year. (For more on the TPB's action,

With approval of $25 million in supplemental Northern Virginia regional stimulus dollars anticipated in June, the Fairfax County Parkway/Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive Interchange will be fully funded. Advertisements for construction bids could be ready as early as December 2009.

The $60.1 million for the Fairfax County Parkway EPG Extension will fully fund Phases III and IV of the project, which will provide critical access to I-95 and much needed capacity for the employees of the 12,900 relocated Army jobs at the Environmental Proving Grounds and Ft. Belvoir. All phases of the project have been designed and construction is currently underway on Phases I and II.

Two other Northern Virginia transportation improvements approved for stimulus funding by the CTB were the Route 28 Norfolk Southern railroad Overpass in Manassas ($24.9 million) and the Courthouse Road Interchange in Arlington ($10.3 million)
